Learn the Story That Began in 1945

Welcome to Paradise Renewed!! Established on August 1, 1945 as Miami’s ‘Colored Only Beach’ immediately became a spot for social gatherings to tourists and residents who made trips to enjoy amenities such as the carousel, the dancing pavilion or the mini-train that would run through the enormous park.

Now, characterized by a unique and precious natural environment, the City of Miami’s largest recreational jewel serves as the ultimate recreational location for those who want to bask in the splendor of the sun and ocean

Executive Director's Corner: A Season of Service, Gratitude, and Giving

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we welcome November at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, we enter a month filled with reflection, appreciation, and community spirit. It’s a time to honor those who have served, to celebrate our shared history, and to give thanks for the incredible people who make our mission possible.

This month holds special meaning for us — from Veterans Day to Give Miami Day and Thanksgiving, each moment reminds us of the values that unite us: service, gratitude, and giving back.

At Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, we are proud to continue the legacy of those who came before us — leaders and veterans who fought for equality, access, and preservation. Their dedication inspires our ongoing commitment to protecting this historic land and ensuring it remains a place of education, reflection, and joy for generations to come.

In the spirit of National Gratitude Month, I want to personally thank each of you — our volunteers, partners, donors, and visitors — for the countless ways you’ve shown support throughout the year. Your generosity fuels every restoration project, educational program, and environmental initiative that keeps this park thriving.

As we prepare for Give Miami Day on Thursday, November 21, I invite you to join us once again in uplifting the park’s mission through your contributions. Your support helps us continue preserving this historic landmark while expanding access and programming for our community.

As a proud Jamaican American, my heart goes out to everyone affected by Hurricane Melissa. This month, in the spirit of gratitude and community, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is hosting a Relief Drive for Jamaica to provide essential supplies to families in need.

Gratitude extends beyond our shores, and together, we can make a meaningful difference — both locally and abroad.

Finally, as we gather with loved ones for Thanksgiving, may we carry forward the true spirit of gratitude — remembering that every act of kindness, every shared story, and every visit to Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is part of something larger: a living legacy of resilience, unity, and hope.

With heartfelt appreciation and purpose,

Athalie

🎃 Creepy Crawly Cleanup Recap!

The last weekend of October, volunteers of all ages gathered at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park for a Halloween-themed coastal cleanup — and the impact was spooktacular!

Together with our partners at @seakeepers and the amazing students and families from @seawolves.terra, we removed 238 pounds of trash from our shoreline. From protecting wildlife to learning smarter waste habits, every piece collected made a difference.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Halloween cleanup without a little fun!

🎃 Pumpkin carving, creative costumes, and spooky-good smiles turned the day into a celebration of both community and conservation.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who showed up for the ocean — we appreciate you! 💙

Event Details: For generations, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park has been a vital sanctuary and gathering place, echoing the powerful voices of Miami’s Black community and the rich cultural heritage they have fiercely defended.

Established in 1945, following the courageous “wade-in” protest led by Judge Thomas, Virginia Key Beach emerged as a refuge for families, a vibrant stage for celebration, and an enduring symbol of resilience. This beach was the sole haven where people of color could embrace the sun and surf, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds across Miami.

Even after its closure in 1982, this cherished space has continued to resonate deeply in our hearts. On Give Miami Day, your generous support will empower us to create a future that honors our past, inspires future generations, and fosters an enduring spirit of unity and remembrance.

We invite you to join us in cultivating a space where every wave and rustling palm tree speaks to the resilience, beauty, and history of Black Miamians.

Let us unite to preserve this beloved sanctuary for all to experience and cherish. Your contribution not only aids in the establishment of the living museum, but also fuels the Trust’s ongoing commitment to provide enriching historic and eco-tours.

These immersive experiences allow individuals, families, and groups to explore the property, uncovering its historic buildings, its rich legacy dating back to the 1800s, and the vibrant array of over 100 plant species and wildlife that call Historic Virginia Key Beach Park home.

Visitors can delve into our extensive collection of historic photographs and artifacts at the Museum Park Building or access our digital archives online, further connecting with our shared history. The Trust is devoted to delivering both onsite and digital experiences that celebrate our diverse heritage, traditions, resilience, and collective values.
