Black History Month Heritage & Neighborhood Tour Group

The Black History Month Heritage & Neighborhood Tour Group visited Historic Virginia Key Beach Park in 2017. The event was a success with over 50 participants who enjoyed learning about the park’s history and enjoying a BBQ picnic lunch. Many participants shared childhood memories of the park.

The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust has expressed gratitude to Miami Country Day School and Cushman Day School for their significant contributions to the park’s beautification. Both schools participated in environmental cleanup activities, including planting native trees, removing invasive species, and picking up debris from the beach. These efforts not only helped to improve the park’s ecosystem but also provided students with opportunities to learn about Miami’s black history.
Summer Backpack Drive – Save the Date Helping Miami’s Children In Need – 2022 Summer Backpack Drive

The organization distributed nearly 300 backpacks to children in need in Miami over the past two years, thanks to generous donors and volunteers. Inspired by this success, VKBPT plans to expand its efforts and reach more children.
Invest Miami: Historic Virginia Key is Looking to the Future

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park has a rich history dating back to the 1920s. It was once a haven for African Americans during segregation but was closed in the 1980s. Thanks to the efforts of the Virginia Key Beach Park Civil Rights Task Force, the park reopened in 2008 and is now both an environmental preserve and a cultural event space.

Trinidadian artist Johanne Rahaman’s BlackFlorida project documents the often-overlooked Black communities of Florida. Through photography, audio recordings, and video, Rahaman captures the essence of these places and their people. Her work aims to challenge the stereotypical image of Florida and showcase the vibrant Black culture that has always been a part of the state’s history.
Moonlight

Moonlight is a critically acclaimed film that explores the life of a young black man growing up in Liberty City. The film’s focus on self-understanding and positive change sets it apart from other depictions of social misery in film. The film’s cinematography and score contribute to its powerful storytelling, and the performances of the actors are exceptional.
Our annual ARTSea was a great hit

ArtSea was a successful event that brought children from all over South Florida to Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. Participants created unique art projects focusing on ocean conservation and enjoyed various environmental learning experiences, including visual arts, dance, marine science activities, music, yoga, fitness activities, and beachside obstacle courses.
