Relive Miami’s history with a free Eco-History tour of Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, a popular destination for people of color in the 1940s and 50s. Explore historic landmarks, amusement rides, and nature while learning about the soldiers, native tribes, and families who were part of the park’s history.

Following Hurricane Irma, TREEmendous Miami and Mission Continues organized volunteer efforts to assist Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. The Miami Seaquarium also contributed by turning their birthday celebration into a volunteer event. Charlie Weyman, Education and Outreach Coordinator, led volunteer efforts with Barry University students.

Museum Corner: Virginia Key Beach Park Trust Progress and the Way Forward

The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust has recently faced a setback with the removal of its Board of Trustees by the City of Miami Commission. Despite this change, the park remains open and its operations continue as usual. The Trust’s mission to preserve the cultural history and unique environment of the park remains unchanged. The Trust staff will continue to work with community leaders and partners to ensure the preservation of this important historical site.

Virginia Key Beach Trust Nominated for an Emmy

The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust (VKBPT) is proud to announce that its 75th Anniversary Documentary on “An Emerging Black Miami” has been nominated for an Emmy Award. The documentary tells the critical stories of struggle and triumph in South Florida’s Black history. The VKBPT team worked diligently on this project to share this important Miami multi-cultural history with the world.

Art With Me is a renowned international art, music, and cultural festival coming to Miami in November. This three-day event celebrates creativity and sustainability. By partnering with local organizations, Art With Me promotes a more conscious lifestyle through initiatives like beach clean-ups and sustainability panels. The festival’s commitment to environmental responsibility is evident in its previous success in Tulum, where they removed over 2 tons of plastic from the streets.

Trust Supports TEAR’s Tale of the Rope

The Miami-Dade TEAR Initiative is hosting a community gathering to explore the history of lynchings of African Americans in Miami-Dade County. The event will focus on three documented lynchings and aims to identify the locations for historical markers. Attendees are encouraged to share information about the victims, their descendants, or other racial violence incidents in Miami-Dade. Admission is free and open to the public.
