Athalie Range, a South Florida woman, broke barriers and set standards. She was appointed to the National Railroad Passenger Commission by President Jimmy Carter. Range’s journey began in the 1940s when she cleaned railroad passenger cars.
The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust salutes the late Sherrelle Sue Germain. A former trustee herself, Germain was a passionate advocate for her community. She was known for her compassion, fairness, and love for others. Germain will be remembered for her contributions to the park and her community.

The education department at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park celebrated Black History Month with a series of educational events. Two presentations were conducted, one virtually to the Northeast Dade/Aventura Library and another in-person at Sidley Austin LLP. Additionally, five Miami Dade County Public Schools visited the park for tours, and NOAA AOML participated in a Black History Month tour.
The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust honors the late Otis Pitts Jr., a community organizer instrumental in revitalizing Liberty City, Miami. After the 1980 riots, Pitts co-founded the Tacolcy Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) to improve the area’s economy. TEDC’s efforts led to the development of Edison Plaza, a shopping center, and new housing. Pitts’ dedication to his community will be remembered.
Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden staff and volunteers participated in a workday outing at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. They focused on removing invasive and native plants that were threatening the endangered Beach Jacquemontia species. The HVKBP education team joined in the effort and discussed volunteer opportunities to maintain the federally protected habitat.

Miami commissioners replaced the board of the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust with themselves. This sparked controversy within the black community. However, tensions remain high and the future of the park and museum remains uncertain.
Deanne Connolly Graham was honored by the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust for her contributions to social justice and business. She was a dedicated advocate for minority participation in business and served on several boards. Graham’s work helped connect people and businesses and promoted equality.
