Learn the Story That Began in 1945
Welcome to Paradise Renewed!! Established on August 1, 1945 as Miami’s ‘Colored Only Beach’ immediately became a spot for social gatherings to tourists and residents who made trips to enjoy amenities such as the carousel, the dancing pavilion or the mini-train that would run through the enormous park.
Now, characterized by a unique and precious natural environment, the City of Miami’s largest recreational jewel serves as the ultimate recreational location for those who want to bask in the splendor of the sun and ocean.
"Preserving the Past. Celebrating the Present."

Executive Director's Corner: Honoring Legacy, Celebrating Freedom
As we welcome the warmth and energy of June, we’re reminded that this sacred shoreline continues to be more than just a place of rest and recreation—it is a living monument to resilience, remembrance, and community.
This month, we invite you to join us for our 2nd Annual Juneteenth Beach Bash on Saturday, June 14th—a powerful day of cultural pride, education, and reflection. As we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, we also honor the strength of those whose footsteps helped shape our shared story.
The following day, Father’s Day (Sunday, June 15th), we will gather for our Ancestral Remembrance of the Middle Passage Ceremony, a sacred tradition held here at the water’s edge. This moving tribute invites us to pause, remember, and pay homage to the countless lives lost during the transatlantic slave trade—many of whom were never given a proper goodbye.
We remember them. We speak their names. We pour libations for their journey.
We also take time to celebrate the guiding figures in our lives—fathers, father figures, and mentors—who continue to pass down wisdom, strength, and love across generations. Bring your families and enjoy the healing power of nature, history, and community.
In addition, we proudly recognize Caribbean American Heritage Month, honoring the vibrant cultures, rich histories, and lasting contributions of Caribbean Americans. From music and food to leadership and legacy, we celebrate the deep connections between the Caribbean and this historic shoreline.
June is a powerful reminder of where we’ve been and the path we’re paving together. Thank you for continuing to walk it with us.
With gratitude and purpose,
Athalie

Tourism Cares Puts the Focus on Meaningful Travel in Miami
Having lived in Miami for more than 45 years, I’ve explored this South Florida city quite extensively, always curious about what my own backyard offers its residents and visitors. As I’ve learned through the years, there’s always something new to uncover in this vibrant, culturally diverse megalopolis.
Oftentimes—as I found out during a recent day-long event with Tourism Cares—it’s when you dig into its past and stroll its legendary neighborhoods that you find the coolest spots. Miami was Tourism Cares’ first stop in its Meaningful Travel Roadshow series, which is focused on providing solutions for sustainable tourism; promoting regional experiences for product development; supporting local economic development; and fostering in-person connection.

Food, Wine & Fete Celebrated the Vivid Spirit and Flavors of Caribbean Culture & Cuisine in Miami

Recently concluding its third installment, Food, Wine, and Fete (FWF) started from a wave of inspiration founder Vanessa James caught during the mecca of Carnivals in Trinidad and Tobago.
Now in its third year, James has found a way to “bottle up” an experience that pays homage to the soca fete experience, rooted in all things Caribbean culture, cuisine, and creativity. The one-day all-inclusive fete is quickly expanding into an annual must-attend event that James describes as “a level up in every way.”
This year’s Food, Wine, and Fete occurred on May 17 at the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park’s Grand Pavilion. The setting is historic, as the first and only beach for Black beachgoers in Miami during the Jim Crow era.
The beach itself celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. 2025’s FWF lineup continues the mission of amplifying the presentation of Caribbean food, wine, and spirits on a beach backdrop reminiscent of the islands.

Sunset Salute: Melody Woods

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Melody Woods, a beloved former staff member of the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Trust. Melody was more than a colleague—she was a dedicated steward of the Park’s mission, a passionate advocate for cultural preservation, and a warm presence to all who knew her.
Her commitment to community and justice helped shape the spirit of this sacred space, and her legacy will continue to inspire us. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her light.
