Sunset Salute Otis Pitts

The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust honors the late Otis Pitts Jr., a community organizer instrumental in revitalizing Liberty City, Miami. After the 1980 riots, Pitts co-founded the Tacolcy Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) to improve the area’s economy. TEDC’s efforts led to the development of Edison Plaza, a shopping center, and new housing. Pitts’ dedication to his community will be remembered.

HVKBP Teams Up with Fairchild Tropical Garden

Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden staff and volunteers participated in a workday outing at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. They focused on removing invasive and native plants that were threatening the endangered Beach Jacquemontia species. The HVKBP education team joined in the effort and discussed volunteer opportunities to maintain the federally protected habitat.
