The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust (VKBPT) collaborated with The Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) to conduct an archaeology workshop aimed at educating participants about the park’s history in correlation with climate change.
The workshop involved a series of hands-on activities, including artifact identification and data collection led by professional archaeologists. Participants learned about the rich cultural heritage of Virginia Key and how archaeology contributes to understanding its history and the changes it is currently undergoing.
These changes were tracked through erosion and sea level rise found. The information will be compiled in the HMS Florida Arches database, which will be available to researchers, land managers, and others to aid in making management and mitigation decisions that contribute to the park’s future.
