Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day and Cel-Liberation Day, is an American holiday celebrated on June 19. On June 19, 1865<\/strong>, the Emancipation Proclamation\u2014 which had been issued on January 1, 1863\u2014 was read to enslaved African Americans in Texas.\u00a0Onward from there, the first official celebration of Juneteenth was a year later, where freed slaves read the proclamation themselves, remembering the memories of these festivities serving as motivation as well as a release from the growing pressures against them. It was a time for reassuring each other, for praying and for gathering remaining family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These commemorative events held parties, sporting, such as horse and foot races and baseball games, fishing and barbecuing. Food was abundant because everyone prepared a special dish. Meats such as lamb, pork and beef which are not available everyday were brought on this special occasion. Also strawberry soda-pops.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
