Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, Miami’s iconic Black beach and cultural landmark, will celebrate its 80th anniversary with a three-day event from August 1–3, 2025. The weekend will honor the park’s legacy with history-themed activities, family fun, community art, and a Poetry Potluck, highlighting its vital role in South Florida’s Black heritage and its continued commitment to unity and preservation.

Join the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust, Miami’s beloved Black beach and cultural landmark, in celebrating its 80th birthday with a dynamic, three-day celebration honoring its rich history and vibrant future, August 1-3, 2025 at the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, 4020 Virginia Beach Drive, Miami FL 33149. Themed “From Coastlines to Communities: A Legacy in the Sand,” the weekend features historical reflections, youth engagement, family fun, and cultural programming that spotlight the park’s vital role in South Florida’s Black heritage; and will commemorate Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Day, as designated by the State of Florida.

“This 80th anniversary is more than a birthday, it’s a homecoming for all who cherish the park’s past, present, and future,” says Athalie Edwards, Executive Director/CEO of the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust. “We invite everyone to celebrate this living legacy and help shape its next chapter.”

Founded as Miami’s “Colored Only” beach on August 1, 1945, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, HVKBP stands today as a powerful symbol of inclusion, unity, and environmental preservation. The weekend festivities promise something for everyone, from ceremonial milestones to sun-soaked fun and soul-stirring cultural expression.

Friday, August 1 – Sunday, August 3, 2025

Day 1: Friday, August 1 | 10 a.m. (Media Day) The weekend kicks off with the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Birthday—an exciting day of fun filled activities with complimentary cake, ice cream and FREE vehicle entry to mark the official day.

Day 2: Saturday, August 2 | 12 p.m. It’s all about fun in the sun at Community Fun Day! Cool down with icy treats, slide into excitement on a massive waterslide, and get creative with free activities including tours, oral histories, live mural painting, and more surprises to keep the vibes high all day long.

Day 3: Sunday, August 3 | 3 p.m. Wrap up the weekend with the Poetry Potluck, a grassroots community gathering of poets where voices, stories, and flavors come together in a powerful celebration of culture and connection through spoken word.
