The Miami Story event was a success thanks to the Miami Foundation, student volunteers, staff, and panelists. Volunteers from Barry University helped document the event and share Virginia Key Beach Park’s history. The event featured meaningful dialogue, online live streaming, and guest attendance. The Education & Outreach Coordinator can be contacted to schedule future volunteer projects.
HVKBP recently witnessed the hatching of loggerhead sea turtle nests. Park staff and NOAA researchers recorded the event, finding two baby sea turtles still trying to reach the ocean. This is a significant sighting for the park.

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau highlights the historical significance and natural beauty of Virginia Key Beach Park. Visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, riding the carousel and mini train, picnicking, exploring nature trails, and attending festivals and events.
Miami’s plan to build tiny homes for the homeless on Virginia Key is on hold for at least 6 months. Mayor Suarez and Commissioner Carollo cited lack of county support for shelters and alternative sites as reasons for the pause. They will ask the City Commission for official approval. The plan faced opposition from residents, county officials, and the historic Black beach park’s management.
Virginia Key Beach Park was Miami’s only beach for Black residents during segregation. Established after a “wade-in” protest in 1945, the beach offered amenities typically associated with white-only beaches. Despite its location and size, the Black community embraced Virginia Key as their own.
The Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (MoCAAD) is honoring Judge Lawson E. Thomas with a mural etched on the building that once housed his Overtown law office.
