{"id":6446,"date":"2022-06-22T20:16:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T00:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/?p=6446"},"modified":"2024-09-14T20:23:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-15T00:23:28","slug":"august-1-named-historic-virginia-key-beach-park-trust-day-by-florida-house-senate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/es\/august-1-named-historic-virginia-key-beach-park-trust-day-by-florida-house-senate\/","title":{"rendered":"August 1 Named Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Trust Day by Florida House &amp; Senate"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/virginiakeybeachpark.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Diseno-sin-titulo-15-1.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Seventy-five years ago, a uniquely bold and courageous action by African American citizens of Miami changed the course of South Florida history and as has been officially acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Florida House of Representatives and the The Florida Senate recently passed a resolution proclaiming Saturday, August 1, 2020 and&nbsp;each August 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;thereafter&nbsp;as, \u201cHistoric&nbsp;VirginiaKeyBeachPark&nbsp;Day,\u201d&nbsp;in the state of Florida which also culminates the 75th Anniversary of the recreational community space and historic landmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was on May 9, 1945, that an intrepid group of protesters dared to \u201cwade in the water\u201d at the site of present-day Haulover&nbsp;Beach, to demand, and successfully garner the establishment of a public bathing&nbsp;beach&nbsp;for Dade County\u2019s Colored population, in keeping with the separate-but-equal laws and customs of Jim Crow segregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The protest accomplished its mission, which was a commitment from the County to open\u00a0VirginiaKeyBeach\u00a0on August 1, and for it to be as nearly equal as possible to the County\u2019s \u201cWhite Only\u201d\u00a0Beaches\u00a0like Crandon\u00a0Park\u00a0on\u00a0Key\u00a0Biscayne.<\/strong> Now 75 years later,\u00a0Miami\u2019s former segregated\u00a0beach, like no other recreational\u00a0beachpark\u00a0of its kind during the twentieth century, continues to forge a sense of community through compassionate negotiation, experiential activations and creative communication between black and non-African American societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of the&nbsp;VirginiaKeyBeachPark&nbsp;Trust (VKBPT) is to carry forward the vision for the development and use of&nbsp;VirginiaKeyBeachPark, promoting and maintaining absolute public ownership and access, fostering its perpetuation as a passive open green-space that includes nature trails, recreational facilities and museum structures appropriate and compatible with the nature of&nbsp;VirginiaKey; preserving it as a valuable resource to be enjoyed for posterity, and to honor the rich historical legacy of the social and civil rights history of South Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Join us in celebrating the 75th Anniversary with a host of activities for the community to participate in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Day commemorates the 75th anniversary of the beach&#8217;s establishment.
