2015 marked the 30th annual International Coastal Cleanup Day and the 5th annual Coastal Cleanup at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. More than 50 volunteers joined together to participate in the shoreline cleanup project at the Historic Beach Park gathering more than 20 trash bags full of garbage, debris and recyclable items from the ocean, shoreline and coastal dune areas. International Coastal Cleanup uses volunteers to collect trash and garbage from coastal areas throughout Florida, the United States and Internationally. Collected items are listed on collection sheets and added together to give an accurate accounting of the items removed from the shoreline and the specific types of trash and debris removed.
Some of the more unique items found during the cleanup activities at historic Virginia Key Beach Park were a full length mirror, articles of clothing, a barbeque grill and a partial skeleton of a large sea turtle.
